Watching American state law from north of the border is a spectator sport we take seriously. Here’s the map as of July 2026: mostly open, with four firm exceptions.
The default: legal in most states
Because of the structure we lay out in our how-it-works guide – no redeemable coins ever sold, a free entry route always open – sweepstakes casinos sit under promotional-sweepstakes law rather than gambling statute in the large majority of US states. But states can shut the door if they choose, and four of them have.
The four closed doors

The California story, from the cheap seats
Until this year California was the single largest market in the whole category – then AB 831 arrived and closed it effective January 2026. Operators pulled out, accounts were wound down, and every offer we list is void for California residents. If we’ve learned anything watching this industry, it’s that state positions move; that’s why this page carries a July 2026 date and gets re-checked every review cycle.
How the rules get enforced
Geolocation, twice: once when you register and again when you redeem. A VPN doesn’t relocate your house – identity verification at cash-out reveals your actual state, the mismatch gets flagged, and the balance is typically forfeited. No operator we review pays out into the four blocked states, and no workaround we’d put our name to exists.
Ages and the small print
Everywhere the door is open, the baseline is 18+, rising to 21+ where a state or an operator says so. Individual promotions occasionally exclude extra territories too, so the final word always belongs to the offer page you actually claim from – not to any review site, ours included.
